BLS Rescue Breathing for Adults or Children Algorithm

This page provides a detailed guide on the BLS Rescue Breathing Algorithm for adults and children. It outlines the steps for performing rescue breathing, ensuring effective ventilation in emergency situations. The guide aims to equip healthcare professionals and laypersons with the knowledge to manage respiratory emergencies. Clear instructions and visual aids ensure proper implementation of the algorithm.

BLS Mouth-to-Mouth Ventilation

Initial Assessment for Neck Injury

  • Neck Injury Precaution: If neck injury is suspected, avoid moving the head; use the jaw thrust maneuver to open the airway.
  • Airway Positioning Without Neck Injury: If no neck injury is suspected, perform the head-tilt/chin-lift to ensure a clear airway.

Seal and Nose Pinching

  • Nose Closure: Firmly pinch the victim’s nose to prevent air escape.
  • Mouth Seal: Create an airtight seal with your mouth over the victim's mouth, or use a CPR mask if available.

Delivery of Breath

  • Ventilation: Provide a steady breath for one second, watching for chest rise.
  • Head Repositioning: If no chest rise, readjust the head or jaw position and attempt a second breath.
  • Chest Rise Failure: If the chest still doesn’t rise, resume chest compressions.

Breathing Technique

  • Breath Control: Avoid rapid or forceful breaths; a gentle exhalation is more effective.
  • Volume Adjustment: Adjust breath size for the victim’s lung capacity—less air for smaller victims.
