BLS Adult Algorithm - Medicus Training

BLS Adult Algorithm

This page provides a detailed guide on the BLS Adult Algorithm. It outlines the steps for performing CPR, using an AED, and providing rescue breaths for adults in cardiac arrest situations. The guide aims to equip healthcare professionals and laypersons with the necessary skills for effective emergency response. Clear instructions and visual aids ensure proper implementation of the algorithm.

  • Establishing Safety: Before anything, make sure that you and the victim are out of harm's way. This might mean moving them away from immediate dangers like water or traffic.
  • Assessing Responsiveness: Gently try to get a response from the victim. If there’s no reaction and you notice abnormal breathing patterns, call for emergency medical services, solicit assistance, and have someone fetch an AED. If you're alone, use a mobile phone to avoid leaving the victim.
  • Evaluating Vital Signs: Quickly determine the presence of a pulse and breathing by checking the carotid artery for no longer than ten seconds.
  • For Detectable Pulse with Breathing: Keep checking their condition and help them keep breathing if needed.
  • For Detectable Pulse without Normal Breathing: Start giving rescue breaths at regular intervals.
  • For No Pulse and Compromised Breathing:
    • Initiate robust CPR with a 30:2 compression-to-breath ratio and aim for a compression pace of 100-120 per minute.
    • Press the chest down between 2 and 2.4 inches and allow for complete recoil after each compression.
    • Maintain the CPR cycle for two minutes or until the AED is set up and ready for analysis.
  • Implementing AED Protocols: Once the AED is attached to the victim, adhere to its instructions. If the device advises a shock, make sure nobody is touching the victim before administering it.
  • Post-AED Action: After the AED has analyzed the heart rhythm and delivered a shock if necessary, resume CPR immediately. Keep following the AED prompts and continue care until professional help arrives.
