BLS Choking Infant Algorithm - Medicus Training

BLS Choking Infant Algorithm

This page provides a detailed guide on the BLS Choking Infant Algorithm. It outlines the steps for effectively responding to infant choking emergencies, including back slaps and chest thrusts. The guide aims to equip healthcare professionals and caregivers with the knowledge needed to handle these critical situations. Clear instructions and visual aids ensure proper implementation of the algorithm.

BLS for Choking in Infants

Initial Response for a Conscious Choking Infant

  • Confirm consciousness; do not proceed if the infant is unresponsive.

Positioning for Intervention

  • Sit down, placing the infant face down on your forearm, ensuring head support and a downward angle.

Administering Back Blows

  • Deliver five back blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.

Performing Chest Thrusts

  • Turn the infant face up on your opposite forearm, with the head lower than the chest, and give five chest thrusts with two fingers on the sternum.

Evaluating for Obstruction Relief

  • After each sequence, check if the blockage has cleared.

Transition to CPR if Needed

  • If the infant becomes unresponsive or pulseless at any time, commence CPR immediately.

Post-Procedure Monitoring

  • Continue monitoring the infant if the airway is cleared.
